The Mayor of Accra has officially unveiled a new initiative dubbed the “Birthday Health Screening” programme, aimed at encouraging residents to prioritise preventive healthcare and early detection of diseases.
The innovative programme is designed to offer free basic health screenings to residents on or around their birthdays each year. The initiative forms part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s broader strategy to shift focus from curative healthcare to prevention, helping to reduce the burden of chronic illnesses and improve overall public health outcomes.
Speaking at the launch, the Mayor emphasised the importance of regular health checks, noting that many life-threatening conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers can be effectively managed when detected early. He described the programme as a proactive step toward building a healthier city and fostering a culture where residents take personal responsibility for their well-being.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries will undergo routine examinations including blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, body mass index (BMI) assessments, and general medical consultations. Health professionals will also provide guidance on lifestyle choices, nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention.
The Mayor encouraged corporate organisations, health institutions, and development partners to support the initiative to ensure its sustainability and expansion across communities within the capital. He added that the programme aligns with the city’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage and strengthening primary healthcare delivery.
Residents have been urged to take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate their birthdays in a meaningful way by investing in their health, as the city moves toward a more preventive and people-centred healthcare system.
