The government has pledged to take decisive action against public officials named in a recent exposé alleging their involvement in tax-related irregularities linked to illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.
In a statement responding to the revelations, government authorities said the allegations are being treated with utmost seriousness and will not be swept under the carpet. Officials implicated in the exposé are expected to be subjected to thorough investigations, with appropriate sanctions to follow should the claims be substantiated.
According to the government, illegal mining continues to pose a grave threat to the country’s environment, water bodies and revenue mobilisation efforts. Any acts that enable or profit from galamsey, particularly through tax evasion or manipulation of state processes, undermine national development and public trust.
The government assured the public that relevant investigative bodies have been directed to collaborate in probing the claims, stressing that no individual will be shielded because of position or political affiliation. “We will ensure accountability at all levels,” the statement emphasised.
Civil society organisations and anti-corruption advocates have welcomed the government’s response, urging swift and transparent action to restore confidence in the fight against illegal mining and corruption.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the war against galamsey, insisting that exposing and punishing complicit officials is critical to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and strengthening the integrity of public institutions.
