Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has shed light on the circumstances that led to the banning of some of the Nigerian film industry’s biggest stars, offering fresh insight into a controversial period in Nollywood’s history.

Speaking on the issue, Omotola revealed that the bans were largely the result of internal industry disagreements, power struggles and the enforcement of strict professional standards by regulatory bodies at the time. According to her, the measures were intended to bring order and discipline to the rapidly growing industry but ended up affecting even the most prominent actors and actresses.

She explained that issues such as alleged indiscipline, contract breaches and conflicts with producers and guilds often triggered sanctions, regardless of an individual’s star power. Omotola noted that the bans served as a reminder that no one was above the rules, even though the decisions were sometimes harsh and controversial.

The award-winning actress also reflected on the long-term impact of the bans, saying they shaped the careers of many actors and influenced how the industry now handles disputes and professional conduct. She added that while the period was difficult, it contributed to conversations about structure, accountability and sustainability in Nollywood.

Omotola’s comments have reignited public interest in the episode, with fans and industry watchers revisiting how far Nollywood has come and the lessons learned from one of its most turbulent eras.
