The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has strongly dismissed claims that money was demanded from the family of a Ghanaian student who died in Latvia, describing the allegations as false and misleading.
In an official statement, the Ministry clarified that at no point did it request or collect funds from the bereaved family in relation to the handling of the student’s death. According to the Ministry, its involvement was guided strictly by established diplomatic protocols and humanitarian considerations.
The clarification follows public claims and social media discussions suggesting that the family was asked to pay money as part of efforts to engage authorities in Latvia or facilitate related processes. The Ministry stressed that such reports risk tarnishing its image and causing unnecessary distress to the grieving family.
Officials explained that Ghana’s mission and relevant consular offices acted within their mandate, offering support and coordination where necessary, while liaising with Latvian authorities in accordance with international practice.
The Ministry further appealed to the public to verify information before sharing it and to rely on official sources for accurate updates on sensitive matters, especially those involving bereaved families and international relations.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians abroad, the Foreign Affairs Ministry assured citizens that it remains dedicated to providing consular assistance without imposing financial demands on families in distress.
As investigations and procedures surrounding the student’s death continue, the Ministry has called for calm, empathy, and responsible commentary, urging Ghanaians to respect the privacy of the affected family during this difficult period.
