Former Vice President and the 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reminded party members that unity is the sole pathway to achieving victory in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary on Sunday, August 24, he emphasized that internal discord and tribal propaganda pose a significant threat to the party’s stability at this crucial juncture in its history.
“We require unity to advance and secure victory in 2028. Without unity, we cannot succeed,” he asserted.
Dr. Bawumia cautioned that repeating the errors of 1979, when internal divisions severely harmed the party, would be disastrous.
Instead, he encouraged members to concentrate on rebuilding trust with Ghanaians by presenting the NPP as a credible and inclusive alternative.
He contended that the party must transcend trivial rivalries and focus its leadership race on competence, integrity, and vision. He stated that the next leader should exemplify humility, incorruptibility, steadiness, and the capacity to inspire hope across all sectors of society.
“If we are divided and at odds with one another, none of us can guide this party to achieve its objectives,” he warned.
The former Vice President also highlighted data from the 2024 elections, which indicated that the NPP’s most significant challenges arose not from tribal or religious prejudice, but from voter apathy in its traditional strongholds.
He remarked that had the party effectively mobilized its base, it would have maintained power.
In concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his conviction that the NPP can regain power in 2028, provided it embraces unity and discipline.
“The NPP will always prevail over tribal and religious extremists. With unity and consistency, we can restore the trust of Ghanaians and return to governance,” he assured party members.
