Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged his competitors in the forthcoming leadership contest of the party to engage based on the merits of vision, policies, and demonstrated accomplishments instead of resorting to divisive rhetoric.
During his address at the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary celebration on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the future of both the party and Ghana necessitates leadership characterized by integrity and competence, rather than tribal or religious propaganda.
“If you wish to challenge me, come equipped with a vision, your ideas, your proven track record, and your integrity, and let us reach a decision together,” he addressed the assembly.
He rejected efforts to undermine him based on his northern heritage or Islamic beliefs, labeling such propaganda as false, perilous, and unworthy of the NPP’s democratic principles.
Dr. Bawumia reminded his detractors that he had loyally served the party during pivotal times, including defending the NPP in court during the 2013 election petition, tirelessly campaigning for its successes in 2016 and 2020, and leading significant national reforms like digitalisation.
He questioned why, after years of dedicated service, his identity was suddenly being weaponized against him.
The former Vice President stressed that the NPP has historically flourished through inclusivity, bringing together various traditions and communities under one umbrella. He asserted that the party’s previous successes were founded not on division but on a collective vision for Ghana’s advancement.
Dr. Bawumia urged the party to concentrate its internal competition on leadership attributes such as humility, integrity, stability, and competence.
He cautioned that yielding to tribal or religious prejudice would jeopardize the very existence of the party.
“The NPP has consistently been the party that welcomes all Ghanaians, irrespective of their origins or religious beliefs. This is our legacy and our strength. If we remain committed to this principle and prioritize ideas, we will be well-prepared to secure victory in the 2028 elections,” he stated.
