Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has conveyed a strong sense of optimism regarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) potentially regaining power in 2028, contingent upon the rebuilding of internal unity and a commitment to discipline and focus.

During his address at the NPP New York 33rd Anniversary celebration on Sunday, August 24, the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer reassured party supporters that victory is attainable if existing divisions are resolved.

“I possess unwavering confidence that through hard work and unity, we will secure victory in 2028. However, it is imperative that we organize ourselves and establish the party as the most credible alternative,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia recognized that the results of the 2024 election indicated a loss of over 2 million votes for the NPP compared to 2020, primarily attributed to voter apathy in its strongholds, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Western Regions. He emphasized that a stronger voter turnout in these regions could have maintained the party’s hold on power.

In outlining the essential qualities for the next NPP leader, he highlighted vision, humility, incorruptibility, steadiness, emotional intelligence, experience, and the capacity to unify the party. Most importantly, he warned that leaders must be cautious in their statements to prevent providing the NDC with political leverage.

“If we remain divided, none of us will be able to lead this party towards fulfilling its objectives. Unity is the sole path forward. With unity and consistency, we can restore the trust of Ghanaians and reclaim power in 2028,” Dr. Bawumia proclaimed to enthusiastic applause.
